My name is Haze Long, I'm an artist & speed painter of Malaysia. And today we're going to kick start the first episode of the Procreate Basic Series. So today we're going to talk about how to choose an Apple Pencil and an iPad if you want to use Procreate. So in order to choose an iPad, you have to first choose your Apple pencil. I'll tell you why later on, but let's jump right into the Apple Pencil. So as far as we know, there are 2 Apple Pencils. Apple Pencil 1. Apple Pencil 2. So today we're going to talk about how to choose an Apple Pencil and an iPad if you want to use Procreate. So in order to choose an iPad, you have to first choose your Apple pencil. I'll tell you why later on, but let's jump right into the Apple Pencil. So as far as we know, there are 2 Apple Pencils. Apple Pencil 1. Apple Pencil 2. So you need to know the differences between the two Apple Pencils in order to choose which Apple Pencil to use first. So the Apple Pencil 1 has a glossy finish with a cap at the end and it has a lightning connector. So this is very important because this lightning connector determines how it will be charged. so it can be charged with any iPad that has a lightning jack. So you can just plug it in in this very precarious position. And if you hit it, you might spoil your apple pencil. So this is not a very good design. So this is how it's charged. And it also comes with an adapter where you can just charge it into a cable that has a lightning jack as well. Other than that, it has no buttons but it has pressure sensitivity so is perfect for Procreate. But the Apple Pencil 2, it has a matte finish, it has a double tap button that is just on the side of the apple pencil. It has no cap at the end, which means it does not come with any charging plug whatsoever. So in order to charge the Apple Pencil 2, all you have to do is snap it to the side of the iPad that supports it and it will charge magnetically. So there are only a few iPads to support Apple Pencil 2. And in my opinion, you could get Apple Pencil 2, it is much safer. It also has an additional button. And at the same time, if you can get an iPad case that fits your Apple pencil right next to the charging side of the iPad, you can basically keep the Apple pencil charged while you're not using the iPad. So that about covers Apple Pencil 1 and Apple Pencil 2. So here in this cheatsheet that I've already prepared in advance you can see all the models of the iPads that support the Apple Pencil. Any other iPads that is not listed in this table does not support Apple Pencil 1 or 2. So first, if you have decided which Apple Pencil to choose, you can then see which iPad you have to look into. So now we'll move on into discussing about the iPads. For the iPad, the first 2 simple factors that you can check is the size of the screen. So you don't want anything too small. So the iPad 6 and the iPad Air 4 is basically too small with the screen size of 9.7 inches only. So make sure that you do not choose these two models and the next thing that you want to look at is the storage size So because Procreate files can get pretty large at some point if you have a lot of projects or you have a lot of layers. So this means that you need to have ample storage ready in order to support your projects in Procreate. I would recommend a minimum of 64 gigabytes in order to start your Procreate journey. But if you can go higher, of course that's better. The definitive factor that determines the iPad you're going to choose is the RAM, which is also the memory. So this is because Procreate projects have something, what we call the layers. Whether you know anything about layers. You can also choose the iPad using the concept of layers. So in Procreate, all the artwork comes with layers So layers stack on top of each other to create the artwork. So sometimes we would use up to 50 years or even hundreds of layers. And if we are just stuck with a few layers, there is no way we can work in procreate efficiently. So this means that we have to have enough RAM. Why is that? Look at this new cheatsheete that I've already prepared. You can see on the left column is the amount of RAM. So the amount of RAM correlates to the number of layers you can have for any size. For example, if you're working on an A2 size on a 1 gigabyte RAM iPad, you only get a miserable amount of 7 layers. I can tell you for sure, 7 layers is not enough.
