ABC 20/20 did not want to do it! And the suicide rate among teens zooms off the charts.
I know this is controversial to do but I feel it is vital to the well being of our children in the public schools. I feel ABC News had this hidden from the American people and it must be revealed for every parent. This video on 20/20 called "Death in the Classroom" was broadcast in 1990. It was shocking when it first aired, but even more shocking ... Why didn't they revisit that segment as they knew that Columbine was part of that 20/20 report?
Psychologist William R. Coulson was a contributor to Culture Shock in 1999. He returned to Columbine shortly after the shooting and he was shocked to find that they were still teaching "Death Education in the Classroom"! He was a guest on that 20/20 program ... nine years earlier.
Culture Shock has been asking the questions and Americans are unaware of what is happening in the public schools nationwide.
Kids are taught Death Education!
Columbine High School was at the vanguard of teaching Death Education in their schools.
ABC did a report on this in 1990, nine years before the Columbine massacre they called it "Death in the Classroom".
Hugh Downs, said at the conclusion of the segment, this curriculum is "overly morbid" for children to be exposed to.
Well, they knew how terrible it was then and said nothing when the worst school shooting in American history happened 9 years later.
I have been speaking to Lisa Shreve, a producer of the piece on 20/20.
I asked her, when the Columbine shooting happened you felt the need to explore the Death Education Curriculum that you found in your report? You wanted to revisit the piece because you felt it was related to the Columbine shooting, right?
"Yes I did", producer at 20/20, Lisa Shreve said. She received resistance to bringing this story into focus.. 20/20 did not want to do it.
She added, at the time that Death in the Classroom was being produced 20/20 started to see some of the people they had to talk to. A production assistant said, "we're having to talk to fundamentalist Christians on this thing"! They wanted to stop the project but it was to far along to do that.
I asked, Hugh Downs concluded on the program that it was "overly morbid"?
"Yes he did say that this teaching is 'Overly Morbid''"
What did Tom Jerrial say to you about Death in the Classroom?
He is "Dumb as hell! He didn't think much of the piece.
Why in the repeat of the program was Hugh Downs' horrified statement on the teaching being "overly morbid", omitted.
I was told that when the program was rebroadcast it seemed that all was well now with this teaching and reshot the ending Barbara Walters commented, "and the teaching is not as bad as once thought."
Again, Lisa Shreve said, "yes they did do that".
My friend, Psychologist, Bill Coulson was interviewed in your piece said, that the goal in psychology, with Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow in the 60's, was to make all teachers therapist in their technique in teaching. Did you have any questions at how these teachers are using psychological methods could be allowed to do so in Death Ed? Licensing for one?
She did not ask him that but said to me, "that's a very good question".

In the past on his own TV show at Fox News, Matt Drudge was outraged at the airing of such a program on ABC's 20/20, Death in the Classroom. Reading from the transcript of the rebroadcast of the show he sited: "One student talked about what we wanted to look like in our caskets! Now you're not hearing this on the main press!"...
